LECTURE
Week 1
In this week's Lecture, Mr. ASRIZAL introduced us to the MIB of the whole course and told us about the three project requirements of the course and the content of each project. Then Ms. ASRIZAL introduced us to Culture & Design.
What is visual: Visual includes all the food we see and is a very persuasive medium.
As designers, we need to understand the nuances behind culture, such as social context and historical significance, in order to create meaningful designs.
- Visuals are :
- Everything that can be seen : wide, all-inclusive, including nature.
- Everything produced or created by humans that can be seen.
- Example : Logo, Tattoos (Japanese).

Design Sensitivity
Cultural Sensitivity Awareness contents of :
- Symbolism and Imagery : Certain symbols and images may carry different meanings in different cultures. Should be mindful for Designers.
- Color Considerations : Colors can have cultural significance, and their meanings may vary across different societies.
- Typography and Languange : Choosing fonts and text styles that are culturally appropriate is important.
PROGRESS
Task 1 - Proposal
In this task, we were asked to form a team of 6 people and develop a proposal to crystallize ideas and, with the support of research, create a final design around a given theme that reflects the students' understanding and interpretation of global issues and design aesthetics.
Requirements :
- The general theme is “Everyday Design”
- Everyday design refers to the observation and analysis of design elements that are seamlessly integrated into daily life. These designs may not be iconic or extravagant but play a crucial role in shaping the cultural and functional aspects of society. For your project, students can explore how design influences and reflects culture, behaviour, and identity through commonly encountered objects, environments, and systems.
- Produce some preliminary ideas on how to visually express your interpretation using design language. Each idea is to be supported by a short rationale. Conduct visual research to help expand your idea generation.

Week 1
We matched our panelists by the rule given by Mr.ASRIZAL.
Here is our group members.
Tang Lilin [ 0376668 ] - Group leader
Gao Yiming [ 0360273 ]
Jessie Eileen [ 0367269 ]
Pan Ruining [ 0378138 ]
Sun Jiayue [ 0376224 ]
Tracy Angeline Tio [ 0362222 ]
I created a WhatsApp group for communication and tracking progress. I actively started discussions in the group and encouraged people to express their ideas. At the same time, Tracy created a preliminary idea board for us to organize the ideas we discussed and the visual references we collected, as well as the key points we need to pay attention to in this project.
We collected information on the hairpin of china, Japanese, and Malaysia.
I organized some preliminary proposals for the research and the feedback from the lecturer.
Week 2
2.12
Before the second week of online tutorial, I organized an offline discussion. We originally planned to study the hairpin cultures of China and Indonesia, but after some discussion, we realized that we had little knowledge about the Indonesian hairpin, so we changed our topic to the hairpin cultures of China and Japan.

2.13
During the second week of tutorial class, shared our ideas with the lecturer. The lecturer thought that the carrier of hairpin was not too everyday, so we decided to change our carrier and need to focus on the culture under study. After the class, in order to make our topic more in line with the INSTRUCTION, Ruining suggested that we could change our carrier to a phone case, which is an item that we all use on a regular basis. I found a lot of visual references on the internet about cell phone cases and hairpin, and after our discussion, I suggested that we could change the culture we are studying to Nyonya culture.

Week 3
We discussed and finalized the topic of our research as Peranakan culture fashion in Malaysia with little inspiration in Minnan Zanhua tradition based on the feedback we got from Mr. Zeon.
I determined the theme of the project Based on the feedback obtained.
I did the division of labor for the group assignment and helped the group members to complete the task.
Tracy and I created the document and PPT together and I made additions and final check and integration.
I produced research on patterning on kebaya clothing.
Provided revisions to Yiming's 200 wordsrational section and changed that section.
Searched the internet for visual reference hoping to give jessie some sketching ideas.

FEEDBACK
Week 1
No feedback in the first week
Week 2
Friday Feedback Summary:
The entry point of Peranakan culture is OK.
The phone case as a medium is also OK.
However, we need to focus more on cultural research because the phone case is just a carrier.
Sir’s Suggestions:
We can research which era of Chinese history Peranakan culture can be traced back to, as well as where it was initially formed and developed. (This will be beneficial for our final presentation, as it will provide a complete research framework, making our findings more convincing to the professor.)
In Week 4, we can conduct a field study at the Peranakan Museum in Malacca.
Week 3
2.20
1. talk more on the everyday design (phone case and hair pin) atleast 1 or 2 pages on this
2. Case study can put in the presentation
3. Missing gap: Do research on Hair pins in the peranakan culture (what is the meaning of the hair pins in peranakan back then and what we are doing is to organize this hair pin to a modern hair pin make sure everyone can appreciate this beauty of this culture)
4. Can add more at the part after introduction
5. New idea: combine hair pin and phone case (example like crocs)
2.21
Before submission on Sunday:
1. 25 pages of research proposal doc reduced to 8 pages(ps.The PPT content can not overlap with the research proposal content). Delete the part that its not related to fashion, for example can delete about cuisines, architectures, religious, language, etc.
2. The rational of the sketch idea (already done can check and refine)
3. Make sure everyone has a part in the presentation video MUST present
(ps.maximum 10 minutes on Youtube)
4. tiktok video no minimum video
* the introduction of the video can be peranakan culture (no need to focus on the product in the beginnings of the video) we can introduce peranakan's patterns, fashion, food, murals or anything related. arounf 3 videos is okay
* our product can be put after introduction
5. Add 1 slide of explanation of each sketches and the meaning. Also the visual references that used (this part I make)
6. find more references of peranakan's pattern (sir asked us to add one more slide i think?) (i will add the images)
Experience
It was a new experience for me to learn a lot of concepts about everyday design. I was glad to meet my team members and it was also my first time to be the team leader for a group assignment. Coordinating the work of the team members requires strong leadership skills and a clear understanding and control of the entire task in order to distribute the tasks effectively.
Observation / Finding
I found that this class requires a lot of content to be completed. In addition to the creation of the E-portfolio and the final product, we are also required to create Tiktok videos. It was very challenging to complete so much content in a short semester. During discussions and conversations with the lecturer, I realized that we needed to think about the culture itself, which required us to do a lot of learning about the culture up front, as well as think through the production of the final product. During the process of making the project, I learned more and more about the Nyonya culture and the hairpin culture, and I realized that this culture has the same roots as the Quanzhou hairpin culture, and many of the elements in it are from China, such as the phoenix, peony, and lotus flower.
